چکیده

Flow of glacial ice in the West Antarctic Sheet localizes in nar-3 row bands of fast flowing ice streams bordered by ridges of nearly stagnant 4 ice, but our understanding of the physical processes that generate this mor-5 phology is incomplete. Here, we study the thermal and mechanical proper-6 ties of ice-stream margins, where flow transitions from rapid to stagnant over 7 a few kilometers. Our goal is to explore under which conditions the intense 8 shear deformation in the margin may lead to deformation-induced melting. 9 We propose a 2D model that represents a cross-section through the ice-stream 10 margin perpendicular to the downstream flow direction. We limit temper-11 ature to the melting point to estimate melt rates based on latent heat. Us-12 ing rheology parameters as constrained by laboratory data and observations, 13 we conclude that a zone of temperate ice is likely to form in active shear mar-14 gins.

Shear heating and weakening of the margins of West Antarctic ice streams

Ice streams are fast flowing bands of ice separated from stagnant ridges by shear margins. The mechanisms controlling the location of the margins remain unclear. We use published ice deformation data and a simple one-dimensional thermal model to show that West Antarctic ice stream margins have temperate ice over a substantial fraction of their thickness, a condition that may control their width...

Control of the width of active Western Antarctic Siple Coast ice streams by internal melting at their margins

Why do ice streams exist on the Western Antarctic Ice Sheet, like near the Siple Coast? And what sets their width? They are streams of typically 30-80 km horizontal width, flowing rapidly towards the Ross Sea at hundreds of m.yr. The streams are bordered by slow moving ice, frozen to the bed, but no structure in the bed has been cited as controlling the location of the stream margins. We examin...

Physical conditions at the base of a fast moving antarctic ice stream.

Boreholes drilled to the bottom of ice stream B in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet reveal that the base of the ice stream is at the melting point and the basal water pressure is within about 1.6 bars of the ice overburden pressure. These conditions allow the rapid ice streaming motion to occur by basal sliding or by shear deformation of unconsolidated sediments that underlie the ice in a layer at ...

Changes in the Margin of Ice Stream C, Antarctica

We present results from satellite imagery, ice motion surveys, and ice-penetrating radar studies of a portion of the north margin of Ice Stream C, one of the ice streams draining the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to the Ross Embayment. Our studies suggest that the shutdown of Ice Stream C about 150 years ago was not a single event but a sequence involving stagnation of ice and migration of the ice s...

High geothermal heat flux measured below the West Antarctic Ice Sheet

The geothermal heat flux is a critical thermal boundary condition that influences the melting, flow, and mass balance of ice sheets, but measurements of this parameter are difficult to make in ice-covered regions. We report the first direct measurement of geothermal heat flux into the base of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), below Subglacial Lake Whillans, determined from the thermal gradie...
